Yeah, that is fine, but a boss like threat you come across in the wild and a boss like threat in your base stood next to the source of all your healing, food, and water is a different matter entirely. I know I can set bear traps (but I am not at the point where I can make them) and scare them off with thrown spears if I am not too close. But, and it is a big but, having to do that every time I come back to my camp is not fun, it is incredibly irritating. Survival in this game is hard, I like it for that. I don't think we need a lot of combat in this game, it is its weakest area.
Animals are in general not scared by fire in this game. The camp fire only guarantees a uninterrupted sleep at night.
The only way to be mostly safe is to build high walls (predators can climb / glitch over low walls). Those walls radius has to be big, so that we won't always get into the aggro range of animals which can lurking alongside the walls. Animals still can climb (or glitch) over the gate than, but with low chance at least.
If you count in the high building costs for a wide and large wall, the best building spot will be some sort of half island or land tongue close to the woods where we just have to block the entrance.
You are incorrect. All of the predator animals that you can aggro will run away if you lead them close to the camp fire, except the brown bear. If you are stood next to the fire, the predator animals will approach, aggro onto you, run towards you and then when they get close to the fire they will turn and run away, again, except the Brown Bear. I don't mind them hanging around my base and running away after they have aggro when I am crafting next to my fire etc. The Brown bear is really pissing me off, though. They will literally sit in my base next to the fire when I go to collect firewood. They will aggro and attack when I am stood next to the fire trying to make chamomile tea to heal. I chase one off, another comes a minute later, and there is no time to get any of the survival crafting done. I appreciate that the predators might be attracted to stored food etc. I imagine if that is not already in the game, it is planned for it, but they should all be scared of the fire.
They just walk directly into my home, the little gate does nothing. The brown bears are too big an issue honestly. It may end up making me quit.
Edit: Wolves do have this attack and retread behavior per default. Has nothing to do with the camp fire, though. They do this everywhere. At least, if they are solo. Can't say if bears do this either.
Edit: I tested it out with a camp fire and nothing else around at night. Wolves and black bears do indeed retread and cancel their attacks if the camp fire is close. The radius is about 20 meters or something.
Maybe all the clutter and obstacles in my base breaks the animal AI or path finding, so the fire flee mechanic does not work proper.
I would say, a high wall is worth nevertheless. Simply because I don't stand still right next to the fire all the time but moving around and do things. So without the wall, I will leave the save area than and now. Furthermore, my camp fire often does not burn during the day time. Quite a bit off topic, though.
It is definitely the case. My base so far has no walls, except for one low fence, which does the job at keeping the animals away on that particular side, even the brown bears don't get over it. So I have got into the habit of standing next to the camp fire to do all my crafting, knowing that I am safe from attack. The only animal I have to worry about is the brown bear. I just don't have the resources to build a fence all the way around, and with the constant brown bear issue, I will never be likely to get enough.
Sill, I need to go look for silver ore on the island now... It is as good a time as any to move to a new site for my base.
That would explain a lot.
