How do I till the soil?

I tried the shovel but no luck? Has anyone been able to till soil in the demo?

Put a short stick in your hand and hover over dirt, i found it has to be a bare dirt area to work.

I haven't tried this yet, but I wonder if you can take a shovel to level the ground and then till that with a stick.
