I have found that hostile mobs will attack walls and gates if they can not get past, putting logs as a "fence" works to prevent this you can place them far apart enough that you can walk between, but anything bigger then a rabbit can not. the hostile animals can not attack placed logs either
you can also climb over the logs if needed.
I have seen a few times: I am running along the path with a cart. Then two wolves appear in the distance near the road. It happened right where I was looking.
Edit: Well, as luck would have it, I just had a wolf pop up some distance away while I was digging in place.
I have a half walls build with sticks and mud, nothing fancy.
