How to get ore/pickaxe?

My buddy and I were enjoying the game but hit a wall in the game and quests, specifically with metal working. We're at a 4 days in game and reached a point where we need a pickaxe to mine ore, but need ore to create a pickaxe and most other tools in game. Our basic axes have degraded to the point where we almost can't chop down trees and keep our fires going and our supplies are slowly dwindling. Running out of ideas.

You can sharpen a tool with a piece of sandstone. Look for pieces of iron. They are near an iron deposit. Look for huts, maybe you'll be lucky.

The map shows 'Rocky Outcrops' where you can find caves containing loose pieces of iron that can be collected without a pickaxe
