Cabins seem largely random but I have noticed that the majority I found were near water – not necessarily adjacent but usually within sight. Conversely, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one near a road. It could be just luck or bias, but I’ve spent likely more time than the average player looking for them or just roaming the land, and since I noticed this trend it has held true. Therefore, checking the full circumference of a lake or following the sea shore are pretty reliable ways to find them in my experience. If nothing else, it makes it easier to focus your search and avoid getting lost.
More generally speaking, avoid forests since they block your line of sight and make it way harder to spot them. Third-person view also makes it easier to see far and look around. If you stick to top-down view, use hills to get a better view on things when angling your camera. Keep checking your flanks; cabins don’t show up from as far as some terrain features, so an area that looked empty might actually have one when you get closer.
In my save, I went on a trip to find a cave, which I did, and during my trip of returning to my base, I found two more. If you play less realistic mode, just run to search every cliffs and rocky outcrops.
You can at least dismantle them for materials (especially leather, which is great to have for free early on to help you on your way to a bigger backpack).
It seems to be RND what you find in the buildings. I've already found everything knife, axe, pointed hoe, bottles, etc
Why don't you forge a new knife out of steel
