DREDGE

Sea Rogue anyone?
I played a game back in the 90's called Sea Rogue. You captained a ship across the ocean searching for sunken vessels where you could search for treasure, fight off other treasurehunters/pirates, etc

You upgraded your ships over time as you got more $$$ and then could find deeper wrecks. It was historical based and each ship you found gave some information on the real life ship. You could find the Titanic, Spanish Treasure ships, military vessels, etc. Over 200 real life ships.

This appears to be in the same genre.

Kinda the same genre but SR looks to be mostly menu based except for when you are diving. Dredge is mostly realtime except for when you fish and grab stuff from the seafloor, then it's a minigame. Also there is no diving in the game since that would be an insane endeavour.
But that sure looks like the type of game I would gotten into as a kid.

Yes, obviously a game 30 years ago is going to be much different from today, but I wouldn't be surprised if the game developer didn't have some experience with sea rogue when younger.
