women doing men's jobs

There is not a single man in this game doing a man's job. The shipwright in town is a black chick, the lighthouse keeper is an old lady, and the traveling merchant/engineer is some kind of chinese lady. And the researcher too.

By the time you meet your 4th or 5th Strong Independent Woman it starts to feel really obvious what they're doing and even distracts from the game a bit.

What exactly is a man's job? Still try to understand that statement. The mayor is male, the fishmonger is male, the trader is male. The real world is full of strong, independent women - one just has to want to see them and accept it.

Shipwright is a man's job. Engineer is a man's job. I'm not saying that women are incapable of doing these jobs, but it's extremely rare especially for a game set in early 20th century. I would accept one of these characters as a woman, like the researcher maybe. But ALL of them? Come on. You can see what's going on here as well as I can.

Also I'm glad you asked about the male characters: the male mayor is cast as a fat coward, and the male fishmonger is an extremely creepy weirdo, and of course we can't forget about the villain who has to be male as well. It's ridiculous.

Some places in the world women do all the damn fishing, sometimes even drive the boats, in Latin America there are women driving cattle because shared work is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing.

In world war two women were building aircraft and flying them to the front. Russian women were putting holes in the heads of Nazis, manning artillery etc. Remember the loosing side? They decided women should stay at home while they used slave labor to build their weapons. We all know how that turned out for them.

Considering how much horror is being inflicted upon you due to the amount of "independent women" in the game I think that the game is doing a bang up job of conveying doom and horror

To be fair the art for the merchant and the woman that fixes your boat at the starting town is pretty bad and uninspired (the scientist looks interesting).
