Random ships

At night a lot of random ships pop up. Are they dangerous? other than seeming to make my character go insane

Those ships normally only pop up once your terror level has increased.

Spoilers:
One is a tugboat style boat with red spotlight that is similar to your own boat. It is actually a large fish that will attack and try to sink you. It can be banished or dodged with the haste skill.

Another is a large sailing ghost ship that as far as I can tell is just an illusion like those ghost islands in the night fog that disappear when you get close.

Those ships when you see them at night have a special loot from them. Just go up and get close to it so you can interact with it so you can get the loot. Sometimes it's upgrades for the boat.

When you leave a dock it makes an autosave. You have literally nothing to lose. Drive up at night and go see one and see what it does. If it smashes you to bits you just re-start at the dock again and lose nothing.
