Also the Trader sells one research part on a regular basis
She does at every location she's at, so you can cycle the locations and get research components pretty regularly.
Also, it's quite visible from the surface as a really big eel.
Sorry, you're totally right about the direction of the crack. Also apologies - didn't know how to spoiler tag until just now.
I've gone all over the tentacle pit, the chasm running past the research base and around the research base entrance and I can't see anything
Also, regarding the research part of the question, I've found setting up some crab pots or using a trawling net to generate lots of currency and then sleeping through entire days. It seems that the traveling merchant restocks research parts every two to three days, so if you can afford it you can just sleep in place and check her shop. You don't have to travel to a new location but it can be a little more fun to do so if you trawl and fish between locations. Little cheesy, but I'm not sure that there's enough research parts to fully research everything without doing this.

So this is where I've been looking, right around the mouth of to the crater and along that chasm. I seriously can't see a fishing spot that isn't the usuals or the silhouette of the eel anywhere
I'd suggest running down the crack towards the pit rather than away from it as you're facing in the screen shot, perhaps?
EDIT: Well that'd do it! Good luck, I haven't looked for that one yet.
Definitely turned out not to be rude lmao.
I could have sworn I remembered catching one in the cliffs but apparently not.
Got the actual fish I was missing just a few minutes looking in the right area
