Hooded figures side quest compilation
Seeing how these are the only "major" side quests (they all give books which could be considered the best type of rewards in game, aka passive skills) that you can fail quite easily I think it would be nice if we could gather all info on all of them (location, requirements and reward) to help each other and to help future players.

It is advisable to not accept these quests until you've completed a big portion of your Fish Encylopedia and have the rods to catch all types of fish.

There are 4 hooded figures: Blue, Red, Purple and Yellow.

BLUE:

Location - M7
Needs - 3 Mackarel fish (Blue, Tiger and Snake Mackarel)
Reward - Book that increases your sell value by 5% and decreases the cost of buying stuff by 5%

YELLOW:

Location - K2
Needs - Red Snapper, Fangtooth, Blue Crab
Reward - Book that gives you 15% rods reel fish more effectively

RED:

Location - L14
Needs - Cusk Eel, Sailfish, Frilled Shark
Reward - Book(Nautical Engineering) Equipment types that use durability will lose it 15% slower

PURPLE:

Location - E10
Needs - Tarpon, Horseshoe Crab, Barreleye
Reward - Book(Pushing the Limit: Engines) Engines provide 7.5% more movement speed than listed

There is no warning or indicator that this is a timed quest and you can fail them. Accepted all the quests as I travelled the world map only to find out the blue one died. This ruined my 74 days playthrough, great design here, thanks!

Blue one died on me too. The quest still counts as completed though! so the only thing you are missing out on is the quest reward. Which, in case of the blue one specifically, is not that good.
I posted this on another thread about this, but just so it isn't missed:

For those who are willing to engage in a little savefile editing, it's possible to restart the quests (though obviously back up your save first and I can't promise there won't be any side-effects - but that fits the game's thematic, surely? You're playing with life and death here!)

After you fail the quest and the hooded figure dies, open the savefile in a hex editor and search for _Failed. You'll turn up something like HoodedFigure#_Failed. That will tell you the number of the one you failed.

Then, search for every instance of HoodedFigure#, for that number, and change each slightly, eg. to FoodedFigure# or something, so the game can no longer find it. I avoided changing the length of the save file, since my first efforts (deleting the entries entirely) corrupted it - I suggest you do, too. Changing one letter in each is enough.

After you've done this, close your savefile editor, reload the game and the hooded figure's quest should be reset.

Did they change it? I have been playing the game without help. I forgot to tick the map where these figures were so I checked here. They had not timed out and it had been quite awhile.

Hello, yes this aspect of the game has been changed. There is no longer a set time period in which you need to complete the quest.
