Bait is so good

I've been really sleeping on the bait. I started using some end game and it seems to give you both a much higher trophy chance and aberration chance. Not to mention you can repeatedly fish for rare fish (or ones with annoying night/day fishing spots) without apparently depleting the source nodes.

After you complete the main quest for Twisted Strand, the Airman can make bait for you. One fish per bait, any fish. After you make some using him, it will also be sold at the Travelling Merchant with a stock of 2. Bait is a 2x1 slot item that spawns a random patch of fish based on your location, and not necessarily all the same type. There's even an achievement for getting a patch of fish with 3 different types while using Bait. These fish ignore day/night cycle and appear to have a relatively high trophy/abberation rate, like OP said.

But what is actual button I have hit to use it? Maybe I'm blind, but I haven't been able to do anything but move it around my inventory.

Select the bait bucket as if selecting trawl, pot or light

I found this thread because I was searching for how to use the bait I got. Thanks Camzillasmom! I should have realized that was how xD

Man... I feel like bait will get patched or removed. I was already set financially before acquiring the bait source, but now... I'll never need money...

Bait is excellent for trophy fish too; I've made it my go-to because I am trying to get trophies for each animal in the encyclopedia. I've already gotten a few trophy aberrations from it--so go crazy

I seem not to be able Sailfish with bait; I'll put it right by where sailfish spawn and I'll not see any sailfish drawn to it, though I am still seeing rare stuff like sunfish and moonfish.

You put it on an "Open Ocean" spot. Sailfish are "The Marrows" fish. Get closer to The Marrow. Between The Marrows and Black Isle would do.

Another important tidbit is that bait will only spawn fish that you're currently equipped to reel in: If you have Coastal, Shallows, Oceanic and Abyssal rods equipped, it can spawn fish from any of those categories. If you strip everything out except for Oceanic, then only Oceanic-type fish will spawn from bait.

Note: If you try to chum while you have no valid categories equipped (like not having any rods at all, or only Abyssal in Gale Cliffs etc.), it'll use up the bait but you'll get a message saying that nothing showed up to bite.
