Best light combo for late game? (how does light range work)
Is Flame of the sky useless? It is more compact and brighter than the Incandescent array, but it has a way smaller range, 25m instead of 40m. The range seems far more important to me than the brightness singe how far in front you see seems more important than how bright the lit-up area is.

Am I missing something? Does the brightness value somehow affect the rate of panic increse? Would love to hear your thoughts on this

I didnt notice the range difference. Thank you for pointing out.
As for the brightness, I did notice that my sanity was barely affected in the lategame. But i didnt connect it to the lights. So you might be right that the brightness has effect.
Because the last hour or so my guy didnt even become crazy running full night at sea.

OK, so I didn't notice the range difference on the Flame of the Sky, either, and was curious about it.

Here is the spotlight profile for Incandescent Array + Cloudy Lens[imgur.com], which is 3000lm at 131ft plus 750lm at 65ft.

Here is the spotlight profile for Flame of the Sky + 2x Cloudy Lens[imgur.com], which is 3500lm at 82ft plus 2x 750lm at 65ft.

You can clearly see that the light 'throws' about the same total distance, but the Flame of the Sky profile goes just slightly further and has a wider inner bright area. A couple of things could be going on here. Either the range doesn't matter and it's just all about lumens, the range matters but the Flame of the Sky just has the wrong description, or, and I think this is most probable, the brightness of your lights is a sum of all the lights you have equipped. I think this is likely the case because that's how it works for the fishing gear, too.

So with Flame of the Sky setup you have a combined 5000lm with 212ft total vs the Incandescent Array setup which is only 3750lm at 196ft total. The Incandescent Array setup has both lower lumens and lower total range, and would probably explain why the Flame of the Sky setup has only a slightly further throw because the difference is only 16ft.

On the contrary, it seems the extra range from the Incandescent Array can actually help to reveal those ghost rocks that appear out of nowhere from a greater distance.

Both of the following screenshots were taken with the small ghost rock (indicated by the green arrow below the compass) just on the edge of fading in/out. With the Incandescent Array setup, the little ghost rock is being revealed from noticeably further back.

Very interesting. Perhaps it's in the middle; the total lumen value of all lights determines the brightness envelope, but the max range (not total) determines the ghost rock reveal distance.

ok, that's...hmm.
The Incandescent array is definitely revealing the rocks further away, but it doesn't look as significant as the stats would suggest.
25m vs 40m is a difference of 60%, but those screenshots look more like 25%.
There must be some weird behind-the-scenes math going on..

Regardless...can anyone tell me what exactly Lumens do??
They seem to make the light visual bigger, but other than that...do they just decrease panic buildup overnight?
I feel like with an Incandescent array + lamp sanity isn't much of an issue anymore already, which'd negate the flame's supposed specialization..

the more lumen you have the lower the amount of panic you get. i have the 5000lm setup and dont get any panic from the night itself anymore.

I have 5000lm too and do get panic from the night itself

Have you found the books which reduce panic value?
