While I do indeed agree that certain gear can in the moment be better than what you have available, by the endgame all gear except the crab pot is outstripped by more efficient and faster equipment from the store. Therefore, there is no reason to have them with you, unless they provide the aforementioned bonus to Aberrations.
If you're worrying about how to get Aberrations reliably, one of the last abilities you receive from the Main Questline will just about guarantee you'll get an Aberration from the surrounding fishing points when used. It's especially useful for those rare fish that only give 1 or 2 per fishing spot.
Ah I see. I have that ability already but was afraid to use it since it permanently removes fishing spots. if it's almost a guaranteed Aberration however, then it might be worth it.
Few, however, stay useful until the end.
For example, You would think that the 1st one you get that is 2 spaces and only gives 6% fishing speed is stupid, but I'm actually using it at the endgame.
After I cleared the Volcanic and Mangrove areas I opted for Oceanic nets,(6 spots) + the 2 spot reward on one side, so I can use the Abbyss/Hadal rod(4 spots) + the Super Fishing Speed hook (4 spots). That setup covers everything when searching for the last couiple of fish and is the fastest at fishing.
Those make sense for allowing combinations.
-The Sinew Spindle has only a pitiful 6% fishing speed (which tbf is fitting for its description but could buff the Spindle to like 10/12% and the Skimmer to 18/22% to fit better under Weighted Line)
-The Tendon Rod could be Oceanic/Mangrove/Volcanic or even just Mangrove/Volcanic to be at least as versatile as Sinew, in exchange for the inefficient slot shape
-The Viscera Crane is, well actually kinda decent but there's no reason to choose it over the
Fathomless Winch that also has Oceanic
Compared to them, the Mouth of the Deep doesn't have any significant drawbacks (other than the slight chance you get slapped by tentacles, but that's an occupational hazard in this game)
In conclusion, research unlockables beat them 3 out of 4 times
With two other big fast rods on the right, your fishing will be very fast regardless.
There's a light you can get from a certain quest that is the best light in the game. It's only two square but gives more light than the four square light and when combined with foggy lenses it gives 5000 lumen compared to 3000.
Some of the hidden gear is pretty good.
