Best Way to get Research Points Post-Game?

I've beaten the main game and am toodling around trying to fill out the rest of the encyclopedia. All I need is something only caught by oceanic trawler, and I have approximately 0 spare research points. I think I've hit most of the lootable locations on the islands. I've pulled up a rare occasional research point in dredge spots. Is grinding dredge spots the only option for getting the last points I need, or is there another way to get them?

Seems that the only way is to farm dredge spots. But I think something with the RNG on that is kinda busted.

When I first arrived in Gale Cliffs, on a dredging run I pulled up like 6 research points in 3 dredge spots, but got killed by the monster over there before returning home. After loading back in on my autosave, those same 3 dredge spots gave me 0 points total and it took like, basically until the end of the game before I got research points randomly from dredge spots again.

The traveling merchant sometimes sells research points. They seem to restock sometimes as I've bought two or three from her at a single location but she only sells one at a time. It'll be under shipyard where she sells metal and bombs.

I don't know what causes her to restock them.

Otherwise sometimes dredging spots will show as one, or will give on instead of what it says it gives.

This helps! I've seen the bombs and metal but never found a research part there. I'll keep looking. Thanks!

It seems like the traveling merchant restocks them every 2 in-game days, so you can just sleep through to grind.
edit: of course as soon as I say that it goes to three days, then more...so it's not steady, but sleeping does help.
edit 2: It seems to move around. You may be able get a few days out of one trader, then you have to find the next one that has them.

Yeah, I got a few "two days in a row" as well after I made the post. I thought it might have been that there's one every day randomly spawned at one of the traders, but I can't be sure. I think I've bought about 20 off her and am struggling to find another one from her now. May be an upper limit? I'm fairly sure I bought 20 as I think I needed 22 when I started, and I only need two more to finish the last research item now.

I found a bunch of research points because I talked with the traveling merchant (button in bottom left when you dock). She gives you research points for finding rare fish.

I found that if the research material doesn't appear after resting for a day, you can save and quit and it'll appear (sometimes and only once per rest).

Unfortunately she doesn't give you anywhere near enough to max out the research tree. I've done all the side quests, dredged most, if not all, research part pools, and I'm still 7 off completing the whole thing! It's painfullllll

Aside from the dredge spots that only give research parts, all other dredge spots have a chance to give them. Not the most convenient, but hope it helps.

Can confirm this worked so much faster for me ^^ rest until PAST 6am, check shop, if there are none there, save + quit. If it's not there when you load back in, repeat!

If you're only here for the achievments, make sure to stack what you're missing for one of the categories, upgrade everything and alt f4, you'll get the achievement and save everything for whatever's left

the airman also gives research parts in exchange for dog tags (i think there are 3 in total, all in the vicinity) (the trader takes the dog tags too so be careful not to sell it)

Find traveling merchant - check stock - buy if present - quit and save - continue - check stock. Did all needed points ca. 10 in less than 20 min.
