How to get Family Crest Question SPOILERS

How do we deal with the giant fish monster at the waterfall? Is there a way to defeat it or is it more you just have to fish quickly and get the crest before it destroys your boat?

I think you're supposed to outrun it but that's easier said than done. I had to tank a hit from it. Honestly it's one of my few complaints about the game and it's a shame I can't feed it some dynamite.

There's an ability you get later but I don't know if it works on that monster and you don't get it until after that quest anyway.

It is very slow. You can just let it chase you a bit and then you can then go back and pick it up.

I just sorta outran it with HASTE and looped around a rock and back into the middle area. When I went to the special dredge spot and started dredging, it didn't attack me for some reason and just swam past and disappeared.

Bait it out of the area and loop around the rocks. It doesn't respawn or follow you entirely so you should have just enough time to fish the crest.
