Both seem highly Lovecraftain in theme
Sunless Sea is MUCH more narrative heavy and much more unforgiving. Dredge has good atmosphere but don't expect the story depth of Sunless Sea.
I never finished Sunless Sea despite liking it a lot as it was simply too unforgiving and having to start again with a new captain every time got old.
I actually finished Dredge.
1. Sanity loss in the dark countered by ship light
2. Ship Speed booster (no fuel in Dredge so you get sanity loss instead)
3. Engine/Ship upgrades to increase ship speed (a big deal in SS)
4. Bunch of islands with characters you interact with
5. Recover sanity by resting
6. Boat design is very reminiscent of the starter boat in SS
7. Boat horn that is never used (in either game)
8, Transport NPCs between two ports
The one major gameplay difference is that there's no weapon for the boat (no fuel to deal with as well) - also it's in third person instead of top down view. Playing Sunless Sea in third person (and being able to fish) would be really neat.
Not sure how people are finishing this in a single day, it's not a speed run. I've been exploring every nook and cranny.
It gets a little spooky but never too stressful like sunless sea where you're juggling fuel, sanity, crew and profit margins.
You can use the boat horn to scare away the birds that try to steal your fish.
Yeah I saw that in another post - that was more of a joke item. :)
As to the OP, if more development work goes into this game it could turn out to be something like Sunless Sea (even better). If this is a one and done deal then it's a minor game soon to be forgotten but one which hopefully inspires others to expand on.
