Some ideas for a better End Game
I get the feeling the game was cut short before some 'Final Challenge' - probably due to limited development funds or whatever.

In any case, much more satisfying would be to play out the rescue - using the powers of each Relic to thwart the Sea God just long enough to save the girl. For example:
  • The Watch might slow down time during some tempest Cthulhu throws at you, giving you time to steer beneath the breaking rogue waves
  • The Music Box charms the God's minions sent to destroy you (they love dancing a little jig to a good sea shanty)
  • The Necklace chain perhaps casts a binding spell on the God's tentacles, allowing you to get under it's mantle to grab the girl, then flee as it throws everything at you.
  • etc.

Ideally, you earlier got to sample these useful powers during the main game. Making it a real sacrifice to hand each Relic over to the "Collector", before getting directions to find the next one.

I like these ideas. Sorry, I kind of made a similar post before I saw yours. I think that the opportunity to use the relics prior to the ending should be involved somehow with monsters we've seen throughout the game. Slowing down time for the stellar basin monster and being able to interact with it somehow, for example. Or using a binding spell on the gale cliffs serpent for a chance to dredge its tunnels for rare treasures while it's not there. It would be cool to be able to fight or catch the monsters in the game even though the point is kind of that you shouldn't be able to. Maybe the last relics could be the key to doing that? It still wouldn't help in the long run. More of those things are going to keep appearing anyway. Still, it would have been neat...

Here's a full list of the Relics if anyone wants to speculate:
  • The Handkerchief
  • The Key
  • The Music Box
  • The Ring
  • The Necklace
  • The Pocket Watch

This reminds me a little of the 'Objects' in The Lost Room TV series.
