Question about the DLCs

Do you play them in the middle before finishing the main quest? I'm pretty far into the main quest and have a feeling that its going to be a "you died" type of ending. I found the Ice area a while ago but left again to go back to the other areas. So should you stop with the main quest and do all the dlc content first?

As long as you don't get rid of the last artifact, you can keep playing. Yes, the game ends when you do that.

Thanks! I decided I'm going to start over from the beginning now that I know what I'm doing and since I just picked up the last dlc on sale.

The game saves just before you start the ending and doesn't save afterwards, so you'll always be able to reload just before the end of the game. It warns you when it's happening too.

I also recommend doing the Ice Area around the midway point as one of the items you can get there is a net that comes in really handy in the northern islands.
