Giant eldritch Narwhal enters the world and fights with giant eldritch clawed beast, and loses, left to rot under starlight. But it isn't really dead and seeks a number of sacrifices to revive. It has secured 4 sacrifices when you arrive, which isn't yet enough for it. By breaking the sacrifices you diminish it's already waning power and it truly dies, symbolized by its horn crumbling to pieces.
Of course, their seems to be a new child Narwhal already in the world, so good luck in the future. If it has fewer eyes though it might be lacking in eldritch powers and instead just be a physical monster, at least for now.
If you get high panic levels and touch the black stone pillars they should provide some insights.

As far as what you can find out in the game:
-Talk to the Traveling Merchant at the Pale Reach to get some backstory to the expedition, similar to what's in the video above.
-You can piece together from the journal entries what happened to the expedition: the Captain got enticed by the whispers of the dead creature to sacrifice the three others, only to be left to freeze as the fourth sacrifice.
You can find two black obelisks in the Reach:
-One describes how the creature lost a fight with the Leviathan, millennia ago. It probably was one of the creatures that made it through the portal that opened when the Ancient Lighthouse crumbled in an earthquake, as described in one of the obelisks in Devil's Spine.
-The other obelisk tells you how the creature isn't entirely dead, and tried to gather strength by corrupting the crew of the expedition.
That's it for concrete lore, everything else is open to speculation. Is the creature dead for good now that its horn has crumbled? Or will it gather strength again in the centuries to come? The regular narwhal I would say is a manifestation of its remaining power, there to protect and maybe gather more life force for it.
