If you need to follow a religion to do what's right, or to feel better about a game you have doubts about, then don't.

You are still an individual, your God gave you free will.

Like, also a religious person who went through personal growth and understanding, you do not need to base how you act and treat others on a book and it's invisible author.

I don't see why not.

Simply put: the game won't change your feelings about JC.

A little late to this question so I hope it's still helpful. There's a lot of unnecessary vitriol and gatekeeping going on in this thread. I'm Christian - very liberal, but still devout in the things I believe - and there is nothing in this game that would preclude you from playing it imo. You could look at it more like a commentary on environmental destruction of our oceans with the aberrations and stuff in it if that helps you. But I really hope you try this game out b/c it is so much fun, and you can turn off the monsters "chasing" you to make it more chill.

If your denomination can't celebrate Halloween, you probably can't play this or read Harry Potter.

Though in DOOM you're slaying demons, it's the most Christian game ever.

That IS a good point, and I only thought of it after I made the post: in this game, you're playing as the evil, abomination-worshipping cult. Still, I've spent enough time reading Warhammer 40,000 as a kid that when the first "evil" act popped up (immolating a spy / captive that arrived with my first wave of cultists), I barely raised an eyebrow at it.

Hang on, did I comment this in the Dredge forums? @#$% me, I though I was on the Worshippers of Cthulhu forums. As far as I know, the protagonist of Dredge never participates in a cult sacrifice.

as long as you are intelligent enough to distinguish a video game from real life you can play anything you want; i am neither a r4pist nor a murderer but i can play gta 5 as much as i desire

I've never converted anyone by saying "God is real". So what do you hope to accomplish by saying "god is fake"?

Lovecraftian stories usually revolves around sacrifices, summoning elder gods, forbidden powers, etc. You can see what the visuals are, and the gameplay revolves about fishing and doing simple fetch quests, so you'll have to decide if the theme is a game breaker or not for you. It's no worse than the standard Dungeon&Dragons themed roleplaying games, imo, but if such game are off the table, then this might be also.

I only see Portal tied to your account, so not sure where you draw your line.

Deeply personal question. Nobody can answer it for you, because people follow their faith in thousands of different ways. What matters is YOUR intent.

If you think its bad and you're looking for us to give you a loophole by saying its fine, then it IS bad - because of YOUR motivations. Because you are looking for permission to 'defy' something for your own pleasure.

If you want to play a fun fishing game with a fantasy twist but want to make sure you honour your god, then you'll be fine. Nothing in this game contains demons. Nothing in this game forbids or mocks the idea of the spiritual world (if anything, it is the opposite). It contains fictional 'gods', arguably; but the Bible is full of other gods, too. The point is that God/Allah/Yahweh is far more powerful and ultimately the Lord of all of them.

If your understanding of Christianity can recognise the difference between realism and fantasy, then its fine. The monsters in here are inspired by the work of a very human author, who invented them, for fun. They are not real spirits or entities, they cannot tempt you, and they are not glorified or treated as 'good'. The "what if?" thrill can be exciting, and nothing is real.

But if your understanding Christianity doesn't let you play 'Pokemon' because the word 'evolve' is used when they're upgraded, or from reading Harry Potter because it contains witchcraft (and they aren't punished for it), if books talking about faith cause too much doubt for you right now... then you heavily restrict ALL media consumption, not just this. It would probably be safer to play a game that tries to be as realistic as possible, like a hunting or fishing simulator, that has no themes around spirituality, death, or faith at all.
