I actually only read that book AFTER the game launched - it was coming up a lot on our subreddit as a recommended read. I've now read it, and loved it. I definitely see the similarities!
It's also all but stated to be the thing that attacks the boat when they dredge up the book originally. And again, FAILING to stop them(just chew on the rope dink), and instead of getting the book back, kills an innocent woman, which drives the rest of the plot as the book can promise to 'correct' this mistake, and it's not like the big fish ever even said sorry.
Again, jerk.
