DREDGE
Before I buy...
I have tried playing it on my brothers Steam using the family sharing thing. I spent maybe 15 mins on it, and all I thought was, surely... you don't have to do this stupid mini-game all through the game? Tapping the F key at the right time to catch a fish? Surely, its not that cheap and nasty? I know it was only 15 minutes, but for that small amount of time, it honestly felt like a Facebook game. I'm hoping there's more to it than tapping F at the right time and grinding away enough money to upgrade your boat. For an "overwhelmingly positive" game, surely there's more to it? But then again, this is 2024, so nothing surprises me anymore. People will swallow any old ♥♥♥♥♥ and call it gold.

Cheers!

Yes, theres more to it...

Sadly yeah. You have to do a mini game to catch fish every single time. There are many type of "tap F"though. You will have an ability to instantly catch all fish but then there's a cool down. The thing that intrigues me about this game is that time only moves forward when you move so I can take my time exploring the game.

You do have to do it throughout the game, but there is more to it than that.

The primary game play loop is Time and space management, with mini-games being a check to potentially screw up your time management. If you're not night fishing, you don't want to be caught out in the dark, and screwing up a mini game can reduce the amount of time you have to fish, dredge, or get you caught by a monster.
Get a fish net, the charm of it is the environmental immersion really, the exploration and the story notes. catching fish is in there, you can just let it auto reel

It just surprised me that a game with such amazing reviews has adopted such a poor and cheap game mechanic. It reminded me of Facebook flash games and instantly put me off. Only got to play it for 15 mins as I say, but if its full of that tap and mash bs I may just give it a "wide berth". Cheers

Sounds and feels (for that 15 mins) like a game that should have maybe been kept on mobile devices, and yet... overwhelming positive on steam 🤔 I will watch a lets play for 30-60 mins and see what the fuss is about, because I can't see it yet. These sort of games might be new to some people, but Facebook and mobile game devs have been absolutely milking the living ♥♥♥♥ out of the same sort of mechanics since about 2005.

Yeah maybe I'll lower my expectations a fair bit and get it on sale to play on the steam deck in "chill mode". I think I just had high hopes it would be something I've not encountered before.

Cheers all

"Sounds and feels (for that 15 mins) like a game that should have maybe been kept on mobile devices"

...

why?

First off, This is one game play mechanic. One game play mechanic, that isn't even the point of the game as I've told you. But because it has this minigame, It deserves to be on mobile.

Hey look, Witcher 3 has a card minigame. Guess it deserves to be put on the store next to *Candy Crush*

Not to mention how ♥♥♥♥ that would make the game. Let me just put four fingers on my screen while navigating tight corridors. It is fun playing a game blind. Not to mention how messy of a UI that would be.

Third. Have you heard of story games? Now I will defend Dredges gameplay, But let's assume your right. Your claim is that because a games gameplay is comparable to a mobile game, all of it's story, lore, and art should be thrown to the mobile store...

What the ♥♥♥♥- I have never seen a more dramatic overreaction to seeing gameplay that you don't like.

But it answered your question, right?
You could have give it more than 15min go, ask your brother, read a review, watch a video etc...

Instead you ran hear to ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan how a game(which you seem to really no nothing about since your asking here) should be mobile game and questioning how it could it have so good reviews on Steam. Simply because people like it.

You have right to opinion but as you see, you are in really narrow minority with that.
So its just utterly childish to say it should have been a mobile game..

More than 96% positive reviews tells a lot but of course any game cannot be everybodys cup of tea. Thats why Steam has refund policy.
No one said minigame mechanics with Dredge are something new but most of people dont play games because of that.

TBH. No. Not that I'm on his side but when asking a question like this, just saying "yes" doesn't alleviate any doubt on the matter. Especially when that response could be from fan, to fanboy, to troll.

Fishing is a major part of the game and yes the mechanic is a bit simplistic but it's hard to name a game these days that doesn't have 'relaxing farming' of some sort to pad out game time, hook you and get you playing more under some sunk cost psychology.

Would you dismiss a Fallout game because the lockpicking mechanic was basically trial and erroring a pin angle until it wobbled?

Dredge isn't a full price game and what it has in other areas in my view make up for the slightly brainless farming.
