Dredge's tie-in with the actual C'thulu Mythos (SPOILERS AHEAD!)

Time for me to nerd out, as someone who has read all of Lovecraft's works, as well as studied the C'thulu mythos. Ending spoilers ahead! Ye have been warned!

The big monster that is summoned in the ending is Cthylla, C'thulu's daughter. The crimson book mentions raising "her" from the depths. It was never talking about the fisherman's love. Why would an ancient text mention some random fisherman's dead wife, after all? It would much more likely explain the process for releasing the Deep One's daughter from her banishment/imprisonment. It just so happens it worked perfectly with the fisherman's desires.

If you look up artist renditions of Cthylla, it even looks like the creature that rises from the depths in the game. This is also the same Old One that appeared in the Sinking City, where her story and appearance perfectly align with Dredge as well.

I'm not sure if the devs actually meant for it to be her, or if it was just loosely based on the mythos, but the book, her story of needing freed, and even her appearance pretty much perfectly match up with Cthylla. Which is really damn cool.

I was thinking it was a package deal where the fisherman *had* a wife but to bring her back, he needs to bring back Cthylla as well. So he either gets his wife back but dooms the world or he could make the final sacrifice and join his wife beneath the waves and save the world.

Definitely possible. The Old Ones are master manipulators. However, I don't recall texts in Lovecraftian lore ever changing for a reader. If five people read the same ancient text, they all read the same thing.

love the whole story and everything about it, i just felt weird after a while, kept expecting to dredge up something more bizarre like a lifepod from subnautica.
