DREDGE

How do I get rid of the Peculiar Engine?
I can't discard it, and I need the storage space.

If you could sell every engine you could be stuck without any, so the most straightforward solution is to prevent that scenario from being possible. There’s no need for the same restriction on any other equipment because even if you sell everything you can’t lose the ability to dredge, so as long as you can still get to artifact spots you can still make money to buy more equipment.

Try picking it up and seeing if you have the option of selling it to the shipyard?

As far as I know you can't. I'm on day 170 and I still have it in storage.

It stays I guess, but later on I found it preferable to group engines over a single giant engine that can be damaged when you need it the most.

Technically it wouldn't even be a softlock, as the boat is somehow still capable of movement even with no functional engines (observable if you have your sole/last engine get damaged)... But yeah, it's mostly just a protection to prevent new players from selling the starting motor and condemning themselves to absolutely miserable speeds until they can afford to buy a new one at retail price

Why not block the last engine in general?

Since I’m not one of the developers I can’t say for certain, but I’d imagine that would at least be more complex. Making one unique item unsellable seems to be relatively straightforward, they’ve already got a system for defining which merchants can buy which specific items. You can’t sell a fish to the guy that buys trinkets and you can’t sell a trinket to the guy that buys fish. Those are sellable in some contexts but not in others, but I’d bet that it’s based on what the item itself is. The peculiar engine is likely just set up to not be sellable to anyone.
Programming in an additional system to make only the last engine owned unsellable is undoubtedly possible, but it’s also possible that it’s not worth the effort. Using an existing mechanic to prevent softlocks can be a cleaner solution, and likely has reduced potential to cause conflicts or bugs.
