Is this game a gateway drug to sunless seas?
I've had that game and sunless skies on my radar for a while now and after finishing this game I feel compelled to buy sunless seas :rwslugcat:

I absolutely loved the setting, atmosphere and idea of Sunless Sea when i first saw it way back and enjoyed watching people play it in the past such as mandalore but anytime i tried myself to get into it I'd be put off by the awful grindy nature of it and the games tendency to just kick you in the nuts if you dare do almost anything even a bit fun.

Though i heard and have seen that sunless skies (the sequal) fixed all of those issues basically ,just a shame that doesn't have the whole "exploring haunted oceans" vibe to it.

I'd love someone attempt a middle point, something between the more casual chiller DREDGE and what Sunless Sea was trying to do but right now, i am still loving DREDGE a lot.

Absolutely not. ;D Sunless Sea / Skies are two excellent games, just much darker than Dredge. Or rather, I don't know how dark Dredge will get, but at least in the beginning it's almost idyllic compared to Sunless Sea / Skies, where the darkness is present right from the beginning and never relents.

There both Lovecraftian, fishing/ferrying, dark and broody, you need to keep your sanity in check and the list goes on

Sunless Sea (and its sequel Sunless Skies) are much more text heavy and RPG/Resource Management focused than Dredge, which is much more casual.

I would strongly recommend watching a Let's Play before buying.

Yeah, thats precisely what I want
Fallen London is worth dabbling in if you like the Sunless games. It's a F2P text adventure type thing that started out years before them.

They're VERY different games IMO even if they do share a common theme. Really liked dredge. Not a huge fan of Sunless Seas, it kind of took the worst grindy and deliberaetly slowed down parts of Fallen London (the parent game) and amplified them. If you're thinking about going there, I'd actually recommend checking out the Fallen London site first. The begining to mid gameplay is very good (if you can deal with timers on the number of actions you can take. It gets way too grindy for my taste in the later stage gameplay and I gave it up at that point). It is also made by failbetter games and in the same universe and if you do go on to buy Sunless seas it will probably make a whole lot more sense if you already know the background to the world it's set in.

hmm, I'll check it out
Honestly, you might want to skip Sunless Sea and go straight to Sunless Skies, the mechanics are virtually identical, but it is much more polished.
I bounced off Sunless Sea so hard.

just watched the mandalor video on both and I fear you might be right
Really wanted to like Sunless Sea, didn't. It's a text adventure masquerading as a full video game. Go play Fallen London instead.

However, Cultist Simulator is pretty good. Not fantastic, but a lot better than Sunless Seas.
