The game doesn't respect momentum when it comes to damage but really you simply shouldn't hit anything at all in the first place.
I agree that the hull is just a bit to fragile ..
I have owned boats of a couple of different sizes up to a 45' live-aboard Ketch .. it fared FAR better than this balsa-wood-constructed boat in the game .. there should be a path to upgrade that knows the difference between a between a rub, a strike, and monster/attack for damage .. would make a great update/patch .. and make the game much more enjoyable for many, many players .. even "accessible" for players with motor-skill or visual issues ..
You do know that many boats are build to ground deliberately in channels and tidal areas .. right?? .. fishing boats are among them .. they are NOT (as a rule) fragile little ships, they are widely built more like tugs and are deliberately built tough enough to survive .. as the OP pointed out, there are plenty of opportunities to get damage from many sources ..
