Chapter 5 can go suck a big fishstick
The Volcanic part is awful. I cant escape these little moron fish that slow you down so the big guy can attack you... and after he attacks you theres always one little guy left who slows me down again and then I get attacked again and have to restart.

Game was easy and fun up to this point, but it seems like I am being forced to grind for upgrades just to have the chance to do this. It honestly feels like the person who designed this part is a masochist and is getting off on making people suffer.

I agree those slow down fish are overkill in places. Didn't enjoy the volcanic area as much as some others due to this. (There was one stone in particular I had so many problems getting at and became not at all fun to complete that bit.) In saying that there's three main ways to have a chance of getting around them.

1. Stay out of direct sight. "Usually" they won't react. (Sometimes they aggro through walls or are randomly swimming places they shouldn't be and come after you anyway which is really annoying.)

2. Have explosives and blow yourself some escape routes. Most of the time they won't follow you over the shallow ledge (and the big chompy one definitely doesn't although it'll lean over the edges sometimes and bite you so watch that.) If you go over a ledge, run as fast as you can and try to outdistance them. (Fast engines help here.)

3. Wait until you have the right "ability" to temporarily deter them and then get out of there.

4. The volcanic area is the hardest. Come back to it if you haven't completed most of the stuff on the other sections when you have better gear.

They're scared off by being drawn over the bubbling vents in the area, which is why there's always one right before the flame shrines. Banish also works on them.

Banish is a lifesaver in the volcanic area; haste is also a very reliable friend. Once you learn the lay of the land, the volcanic region is one of the easiest in the game

I use all of these abilities and I highly doubt its "one of the easiest", because the others are literally a snooze.

Thanks to banish, the abundance of volcanic vents, and the numerous walls to keep out of their sight, the volcanic area was the easiest place for me. Only real danger was not paying attention, and having big momma literally blindly swim right up to me. Other than stellar basin and marrow that basically have no danger period.

Have to agree, Volcanic was the easiest area for me. Since there are heat vents all over the place, you rarely have to worry about the big fish getting called over. And if you need to reach a tough altar or something, you can just pop Banish to safely get there.
I found the volcanic area to be easier than the mangrove area, kept bumping into the narrow passage walls. On the island with the fanatic there's some stones with hints as to how to deal with the fish. The vents are everywhere in the area and if you're just aware of where the little fish spawn you can generally just avoid them by making shortcuts.
I focused on a fast boat so that also helps. Once I noticed their detection range and the vents it wasn't so bad. Also docking anywhere shoos them away as well.

You are going the wrong way, get dynomite, every area you need to get to has a back entrance

I went to the Devil's Spine after Stellar Basin cuz at that point I thought "why not sequence break? You're not my dad, The Collector, I don't have to listen to you!"

It's frightening at first when you're being hounded by swarms of tiny red, angry fish and menaced by one giant one. But once you figure out that you can sit on volcanic vents to scare the fish off then it becomes much easier. All you're really doing is keeping an eye out for the next vent to escape to if you need to, and the fish only really swarm around the runs anyway.
