soft locked?
I'm parked at the campsite on the south side of gale cliffs with a damaged engine. No matter what I do or which way I go, the monster ends up killing me before I can get anywhere to repair my engines. Not sure if I'm missing something or if I just have to restart the game (which I won't do because I feel like it's super likely I'll run into this again).

Can you scoot around the little island you are parked at? When you get to the other side you can make your way to the ocean and the eel shouldnt follow you that far. Itll take longer to get home so long as you keep a healthy distance from the main archipelago

I've tried going way out into the ocean and he has gotten me out there, even coming from further out from the island than my position and ramming me towards the island. I realize the mistake I made was docking at campsite with broken engines. One time I got killed by what appeared to be a kraken instead of that one-eyed monster.

What do you mean by 'campsite' in Gale Cliffs? The Ruins where the hermit lives, or closer to where you get the Oarfish / Family Crest?

If you mean the ruins, you can sleep until the middle of the day and the beast shouldn't be "doing it's rounds" as it typically does this 2-3 times a day, and you should be able to hobble across to the Dusty Pontoon even with a done in motor, a place which you can repair at.

It'll take a while but you can skirt around the outer edges of the cliffs without going fully into the ocean to try and minimize your chances of running into either critter. If you keep a distance of about 20-ish feet from all outer rocks/islands you should avoid the patrol paths (maybe a bit more near the triple shipwreck area, if you go that way). You will be crawling though so you really can't outrun anything and probably won't make it all the way around before nightfall. In which case, it might be best to try and leave the dock around 4am (when angler boats despawn) and keep your lights off when night does fall again. Your lights can help you avoid rocks, but they also anger the haze things and attract angler boats so if you are still slowly crawling through the water at night it's a lot easier to dodge the potential of rocks than it is to even remotely attempt to outpace an angler boat or an angry haze. If you stay out of sight of the serpent's patrol paths you should still be able to avoid that, and if you aren't quite in ocean you should also be able to avoid the other leviathan as well. Still might take a couple of tries if you end up being unlucky though.

I'm not sure I understand either. If your engines are damaged either go right around the outside of the island and repair them (the monster doesn't swim randomly around in the ocean, it's in between the cliffs) at the raft (hang around catching fish in the shallows to get the money together if you need to), or worst case scenario if it destroys your boat, you get sent back to your last save point (seemed to be the last time you docked somewhere.) If you can't complete the task to get the crest now, it's no big deal. Just leave it and come back when you have a better boat (faster/stronger) or a deterrent later in the game. (That's what I did.)

the problem is they docked at that abandoned campsite near the back of the cliffs last, so if they do die, they return to that spot with their engines still gone and have to try again.

^ right I think my big problem is that I saved at teh campsite dock with busted engines so I always get put back there if I die, which I do with one hit because my ship is damaged from when the monster got me while I was retrieving the crest. It doesn't seem to matter which way I go, sticking close to cliffs vs going way out in the ocean (west), it always seems to get me. I think my save is in the middle of the day so it gets dark fairly early in the trip, I'm going to try sleeping until morning to see if maybe panic build up is part of the issue.

The serpent itself patrols around the cliffs. You just won't have the speed to really exploit that patrol route right now. The thing in the ocean is an entirely different critter that admittedly looks kind of similar, but larger. Either way you go is going to take a while with no engines though, so no need to rush it either way. Better to start early in the morning and at least avoid the night hazards as much as possible.

ohhh I was wondering if I was running into a different monster because I went way out away from the cliffs because I thought the one in there kept coming after me... that explains why the one out there was coming from further out into the ocean and moving towards gale cliffs. I tried leaving at 6am and got almost all the way to the repair pontoon and the cliffs one spawned right there and killed me again, perhaps I just have to rng it, which is super annoying given how long it takes.
Leadfoot Apr 7, 2023 @ 3:18pm
that must have been it, I was running into another monster by going too far out. I stuck closer to the cliffs and after a couple more tries managed to get back to the pontoon and repair. Thanks all.

TL;DR - not soft-locked

Congrats on getting out of an annoying/tough situation. Now may be a good time to mention that having multiple engines can help reduce the chance of that happening again in the future. The bigger engines may give more speed overall but they are riskier when it comes to the potential of losing them to damage.

Oh, ok get it now. Congrats on getting out of it. When I've had an issue like that I've found resting until the monster leaves (I've never had any of the monsters stick around for too long if you sleep at the dock unless they have a glitch) and then leave about an hour or two before dawn (seems to allow your fear to drop a bit again during the day which helps) and limp wide (but keep the land in sight) around the island back to the main area? Occasionally you get unlucky with other stuff, especially if your fear gets too high (red eye) so worth being completely rested and avoiding the dark and fear inducing things like though red clouds as much as possible. Also second RequiemRose's suggestion about the engines. I researched those one square engines as soon as possible and put at least one or two of those in there as if you have only one or two larger engines it becomes a much bigger deal if they get damaged.
