Metal upgrade for hull?

I think the game calls this item refined metal - is this found in the world like the regular metal and wood and cloth? Or is it only obtainable from the floating merchant?

It can be found around the world in specific locations.

I have found the merchant, just dont want to part with most my money to buy it. Does it spawn anywhere near her floating shop by any chance?

There are a few, set spawn locations, most of them either blocke off by need for explosives or protected by some danger. First one I found was in the back of the Gale Cliffs, in the little area with a waterfall where the big fish hangs out. It will come bite your boat while you're fishing it up probably, but that won't be enough to sink you.

if you don't mind waiting a little bit util you unlock the significantly cheaper explosives, you can gain access to a couple of dredge spots around the world that have refined metal. One is right there in Gale cliffs, a 2 sided shortcut (as in you need 2 explosives to fully clear the shortcut) between the bay where she is at and the waterfall area within the cliffs. Only need one explosive to access the dredge spot, but that's still cheaper than getting refined metal directly from the travelling merchant.

Other major areas also seem to have one of these, but some are a bit easier to find. In the Marrows there's a spot nearing the back of the island if you putt around the blackstone isle side of it (somewhat between one of the cloth dredge spots and where you initially found the key relic). In stellar basin the spot for it is over by the abandoned resort. There's another in the twisted strands blocked off by fallen trees but it's a little harder to describe exactly where in that confusing swamp. As for devil's Spine, I think there is one there as well but by the time i had gotten there i was already fully upgraded so I didn't really take note of where that is.

The traveling merchant sells this and restocks regularly, anyway, so it's actually the easiest material to get.
