Sorry about that! Do you know what the crash message is more specifically?
Bugs:
* At one point, the menu (clock, horses energy meter,...basically entire UI) was invincible and inaccessible. Hitting ESC did nothing, and hitting E next to the bed didn't do anything either. Could walk and ride (mounting and dismounting worked fine,as well picking up items that grew outdoors) without any issues. I closed the game, loaded the save and everything worked fine again.
*The gate to Rivershine Ranch glitched on me. I was riding in a circle next to the gate and accidentally rode right into the gate with sent me to the town. Only issue is I was met by a blackscreen; I could hear the sounds my horse was making, but otherwise, nothing seemed to work. I hit ESC and it sent me to the menu, the image showed up only for a second before the screen went black again. I hit ESC to exit it, saw the town and my character for a split second and the screen went black again. Closed the game, loaded the save, and bam everything is back to normal.
*Once I got to the later part of the demo (had to win more competitions to see what will happen with the statue), I had to stop the game for a moment. Hit ESC, left the game for 5-10min, came back, and... I couldn't continue. The continue-button was greyed out, and when I tried to load the save,my save was greyed out as well... had to restart.
Now , the feedback! Will start with the good things :D
*many many MANY coat colours! I am in love with flaxen dun coat, both IRL and the one in the game! The white markings can get a bit repetitive sometimes, but I take vatiety of coats over white markings anytime.
*training brings a visible better performance of a horse. It feels worth my while to train my pixel ponies for once!
*details. I really love how the rider is gently leaning forward when the horse is trotting up a hill... couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it the first time (ended with me crashing into a gate and crashing the game into blackscreen LOL).
* brushing, feeding and mucking out stalls is not another atrocious minigame with glitter and sparkles slapped over it to make it cute.
* no atrocious pink slapped into every corner of the game (obstacles, the title, the hints, UI and...more). Thank you for not making a stereotypical "mostly girls play horse games so lets slap pink everywhere" move here. This game feels very cozy and welcoming regardless if it's an older player or a new younger player.
* farming in this game is very simple. I kind of like it: since most of the time goes to horse training and horse-related activities, more advanced farming mechanic could become too stressful (unless automated watering crops with sprinkles was available).
*beautiful surroundings (actual open world! :D) and music! Can ride all day long and just enjoy the view.
*horse neighs when I enter the stable. They are adorable!
*auctions! buy, train up,sell. Profit :D And the minimal price being displayed before you put the horse up for auction? YES! Thank you!
* 2D images of the villagers are really well done. Love that their expressions change depending on the NPCs mood.
*controlling the horse with the mouse is very smooth! Tight turns are a bit of an issue tho...
Improvement tips (since I have NO idea how the finished product will look like, there may be things listed that are being worked on. If so,skip them :)
*The canter and trot animations are a bit stiff and wonky. They are not horrible but could be improved upon.Nothing destroys the gameplay or prevents from enjoying the game.
*Mailbox where we can re-read letters sent by other town people. (can happen I missed this. I was concentrating too much on riding and training these past 9h...)
* hiring a stablehand becoming an option? They would feed and brush the horses, maybe train (limited amount.Maybe 2 or 3 depending if it's experienced stablehand or not?).
I don't know if the stable will become expandable,or if this is the max horses we can own. Even now, if one decides to train a horse until their energy goes into red zone, it takes an entire day. This process can get a bit repetitive.
* quests not being marked on the map. It works in the demo since it's a small map for now,but once the areas get bigger and more areas are unlocked...it could become a bit problematic with finding things.
*limited clothing and hairstyles. They do have nice variety, but wouldn't hurt with extra hairstyles (straight, high pony tail, wavy, short).
Overall:
This game is going in the right direction. Has a nice, relaxing and cozy atmosphere, competitions are fun and dosen't stress out the player and nice visuals. Enjoying this demo a lot right now!
I was also a little confused when, while I was in the stable with my horse, I equipped the tack, and when I exited the menu the tack was no longer there? I think it's probably because while the horse is stabled the tack doesn't appear, but it was a little confusing. I thought it didn't save or something. When I mounted up, though, the tack appeared as I expected. Not a bug, but just something that was a little unclear.
I'm enjoying it so far, though! Excited to explore more of the world with my trusty steed, Super Diesel
I would like to see the free camera be an option in settings to turn on and off instead of having to enable it every time you go to a new area or dismount. It's very clunky to control without it enabled with a keyboard and laptop touchpad. I'm excited to see the full game!
Bug: I went into town to complete Madeline's quest which asks you to complete a competition in the meadow. The quest said just to talk to her to complete, presumably because I had already done both competitions before, but just to be safe I looked at the board to make sure I didn't miss any new ones. I didn't, so I went to go talk to her...and it brought up the competition board menu! I tried a few times, but every time I tried to talk to her I got the competition menu instead of her actual menu. i didn't check if leaving the area or quitting the game would solve this problem; I just decided to quit for the day after this.
A couple suggestions:
- You currently can't see a visual for horse tack; I think it would be good for at least the horse tack and player clothes to have a visual in the shop so you can see what they look like before buying instead of having to guess.
- Personal opinion, but I feel like the horses in the starting auction are a bit samey; I understand that you want some of the coat colors and such to be unlocked later, but I think it would be nice just to have one or two more coat colors, as the three we have now are very similar to each other.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and have a great day!
Bugs are issues in the game that should not be there.
Annoyances are minor issues in the game that are meant to be there but feel tedious.
Suggestions are my thoughts and ideas for future implementations but do not necessarily need to be added.
Bugs:
1st Bug: UI Menu disappearing.
When I was talking to River about the flower jump quest I went into her shop to buy the jump, then I didn't notice the back button so I casually pressed the escape button but by accident, I pressed it twice. This caused my entire UI menu to disappear. The only this I could do was mount my horse as far as I was aware. I simply restarted the day by quitting the game to fix this. This likely works on other characters but I did not test this.
2nd Bug: Shop overlaying on menu text (Chat, Quest, Shop, Cancel).
Round 2 with River and the jumps. I bought the jumps, made sure to only press escape once still not realizing the back button, and then realized I'd missed what she asked me to do. When I went back to chat with her the shop menu overlayed and overrides the chat UI menu to interact with River. I then noticed the back button, pressed it, and viola it was fixed. This happened with Jai too so presumably this may happen with all NPCs.
3rd Bug(?): Horse jumps over jump then suddenly halts with no animation,
This may be a feature but it wasn't explained in the tutorial (that or I'm forgetting it). When I jump sometimes my horse just idles and I have to spam the W key to go forward again. Particularly only in races so far and there is no accompanying animation or linkable cause that I could find to make this occur within my game.
4th Bug: Madelaine competition board overlay glitch.
When I was nearing the end of the demo I had a quest with Madelaine that required me to win multiple races. I had done so and clicked on the competition board again only realizing after the fact that I had completed the quest. So I backed out of the board and attempt to go talk to Madelaine but she greets me with the competition board interface instead of her usual interface. I could fix this by simply doing a race and talking to her after.
5th Bug: Sitting on a chair and then pressing S to "get up" but the sitting animation kept.
A rather amusing bug I sat on my chair in my house only to press the S key to get up, however instead of getting up my character kept sitting! She was very talented and even slept while sitting, continued to sit when waking up, taking care of my horses, even when mounting them continued to sit. However, sitting in the chair again and pressing the W key fixes this, or simply dismounting my horse as well. I did find that the camera got stuck in the "Alt view" when I mounted my horse with this glitch and did not fix itself even when entering a new area. However, it did fix itself when dismounting but would go right back when I mounted again.
6th Bug: Unable to grow Alfafa seeds.
I am able to plant them but for some reason, they disappear the next morning and do not return and thus I am unable to grow them. I have not tested this on other saves.
1st Annoyance: Some objects have a bigger hitbox than they should.
For example, when doing the final race in the demo, the intermediate Rivershine race, you start out in River's paddock but when you are on the last jump in the paddock the fence post to your left at the opening has a very wide hitbox that will instantly stop your horse from progressing and you'll have to walk in a wide motion to avoid the hitbox. I said "some" objects but as far as I'm aware this is the only one that really stood out to me, if someone else has one please comment below!
2nd Annoyance: Bonding is slow and takes quite some time.
On one hand, this totally makes sense when getting to know a new animal or person but on another game mechanic level, it takes quite a while for you to raise bonding. I believe my highest bond was 36% or so before having to sell her since she became obsolete for lack of a better term. Having to constantly rebond with a new and better horse slowly might become frustrating for some players including myself. I don't really have any mechanic suggestions since I'm not sure of the inner workings of how bonding all comes together other than what raises and lowers it.
Suggestions:
1st Suggestion: A slight bit more variety when starting out.
Very limited options in terms of starting coat colors. I do understand and actually appreciate the need to upgrade your auction house to get rarer coats but if you're going to use horse genetics (presumably realistic but simplified?) then I'd recommend allowing the three different types of base coats to be black, bay, and chestnut with some variation in the chestnuts in their coloring like liver chestnuts like we have already. Since these coats are the starting points for a dilution or markings variation we see in the real world!
2nd Suggestion: Cute little animals! Let's have our own!
I don't believe this was a feature that was or is planned but I noticed the cute little sheep and chickens around town that add life to the environment. Although I'm not sure of the practical use I think it might be nice to have chickens, sheep, cows, or just one of those as an option where we could either take care of them in a pasture or the more likely solution let them free range on our ranch and collect resources from them. These resources could go into making tack, snacks, selling to vendors, making prices cheaper on certain items, or even food for our own character (whether this food has any use or is purely for decoration is up for debate).
3rd Suggestion: Animations are serviceable but might need some work.
I enjoy the animations but I have noticed the trot looks a bit wonky sometimes as well as stiff while the canter looks just stiff. Though a fairly minor issue to me I might advise spending time on this near the release of the full game to really polish that part of the game if enough people have an issue with it.
4th Suggestion: Providing a 3D rotating image for shop items would be a nice touch for some and necessary for others.
I'm fine with the shop as is but some items, like tack, will likely need a 3D or 2D model to show what the player is putting their money into without worry. For other items like apples, feed, bedding, manure, etc. might not need a model to look at but would certainly be a nice QOL addition.
5th Suggestion: Pets that follow you into town? Like dogs, cats, birds, etc.
This would be an after-full-release addition - if you even do those -. I personally find it really enjoyable when an interactable pet follows you around in a game. It can add to the immersion, make an environment more enjoyable to be in, make for some good laughs and memories, etc. This is not a necessary add or even a probably add but more of a last on the list add since it just adds to the QOL but would take a lot of work. For the actual use outside of just being nice, a dog could help herd sheep or cows and protect chickens from foxes if owning animals other than horses was implemented, a cat might allow pastured horses to keep all of their energy, or stabled horses don't need as much food the next day, birds might lay eggs of their own and help a horse gain more speed, a lizard could help a horse with jumping, a turtle with endurance, and so on. You'd likely be limited to one pet.
6th Suggestion: Ability to decorate the inside of our house and stables.
I know we'll be able to upgrade our stables but I'm unsure if we can decorate them or our houses. It'd be nice to either make or buy our own furniture and "upgrade" the interior of our house and stables to fit our own unique style. This obviously would take a lot of work if not already planned so may be an after-full-release update.
7th Suggestion: Ability to upgrade our house.
Although we won't marry or have kids as far as I'm aware I'd like to have a bigger house then what feels like a New York apartment. I don't believe this is in the planned updates for the game already but I'd be really happy to see it!
8th Suggestion: A wash stall would be nice.
Although not needed I think it would be nice to switch up the grooming feature when just brushing gets old. This would likely be a later edition when upgrading your stable and it would provide an alternative option to just brushing.
9th Suggestion: Visible genetics panel.
Not sure if this is planned or if it's a guessing game like with some horse games when you breed but I'd personally love a simplified but explained well enough genetics panel for our horses where we can get their phenotypes and genotypes tested at the vets. Wild and auction horses would not have a tested genetics panel.
10th Suggestion: Groundwork with adult horses too!
I believe we will get to work foals on the ground if I didn't read the roadmap incorrectly, however, I did not see the same applied to adult horses where we can work with them on the ground as well. Although not necessary it would be a nice alternative to simply riding the horse around. It could also serve as another bonding exercise.
11th Suggestion: Minimap with indicators.
Although the map works just fine it does stop you and your horse from moving since it covers the whole screen. It would be nice to ride into town to go see George and see outside of his shop if he's actually there or not already without having to stop your horse completely.
Although I want to add more suggestions I don't want to overwhelm the developer! Thank you for such a great demo it really does feel like early access already to me and is really enjoyable! Although there is work to be done I want to thank you for all your hard work!
1. It would be awesome if you reduced how quickly the time passes during the day, or at least provide a few options for us to choose from. I noticed that once you get more than one horse, it gets really hard to squeeze in working with all of them, whether training or competing or just riding, due to how quickly time passes every day. And considering that in the future we will be able to have a lot more horses, It will become a race against time to complete all we plan to do during one day. Don't get me wrong, I am not expecting being able to work thoroughly with 10+ horses every single day, but slowing down the clock and making the day last longer would definitely make the whole experience enjoyable.
2. It would be awesome if you provided a simple petting option! I love how the caring system is, and even more so how horses respond and calm to you once your trust with them is higher, it feels like a shame that I can't actually pet them. :D
While doing the beginner Rivershine race my horse soft locked on the first jump. I don't know if I missed the jump or if it was something about the sheep trying to run through the fence while the horse was jumping but I couldn't do anything. My horse wouldn't turn, back up, go forward, or jump the fence. I couldn't hit escape to access a menu, just sit there while the timer kept going.
