Lets say there's a large health pick up on the ground and you have 99% health. Now do you really want to waste it for 1% health gain? or do a little back track later on and collect the health when you really need it? Auto pick up would not be good for this type of game.
Ya know i thought the same thing while playing it, but did you notice that there are sections where you open a door and the machine scans you...the doors behind you close. I actually left a health pack in another room, walked into the scanning room, and once i opened the door then the back door shut behind me so i couldnt get that pickup anymore.
But yeah i get what youre saying it does make total sense. Maybe a toggle where you dont pick it up if its not at least going to add 25% or something like that. But yeah the door closing behind you stinks too. Which that wouldnt happen.
