I think the developer has VR in mind, Its a very small gaming area, its a simple mechanic, and i think it would work well in VR.

Seconded, the moment I looked at it I thought this games would be perfect and absolutely amazing with a VR mode.

There's an indie VR game called High Seas which has a very similar perspective: https://sidequestvr.com/app/359/high-seas
