So today i wanted to play online with a friend playing on xbox,
is that even a thing or the whole crossplay thing was a scam?

Crossplay is only between Steam and Epic, PS and Xbox, and PC Game Pass and Xbox users with crossplay turned off.
PC gamepass cannot play with PS or Steam/Epic.

Xbox runs on a different version of the game than Steam. Lower quality textures plus lower lobby sizes to account for last gen consoles. Updates are also pushed out at different times for PC and Console versions of the game. PC gamepass uses the Xbox console version of the game, with a few tweaks to prevent crossplay with PS.

You would either have to buy Isonzo off of the Microsoft store (Xbox app) or subscribe to Gamepass.

Well then it's reasonable
DEFINITELY get it on PC game pass and play with the Xbox community. There's a ton of people playing with the game pass release, more than there's ever been on steam. (I've owned it on both platforms since release.

For those with gamepass. You can share your gamepass with family through your microsoft account.
Then your friend scan play with your gamepass all the same games you can. It is better than steam family share because you can play at the same time with not restrictions.

Yes, very sorry that the developers wish to keep the Steam and Epic versions of the game updated consistently without having to wait for Microsoft or Sony's approval process, and keep it from being downgraded to smaller lobbies for last-gen consoles.

The game could be brought to 100 player lobbies on PC and 50 players on last gen if the game was actually optimized.(at least for the CPU bottleneck i mean)

Nowhere did I state "PC Superiority", these are simple facts. Console versions of the game are downgraded, both graphically and gameplay-wise, and updates for them take longer due to Microsoft and Sony. It's better to keep them separate to avoid such issues than to make the playerbase suffer slower updates and lower lobby sizes.

Unfortunately, afaik, that's just due to Unity not being a well optimized engine. There's not much the devs could do I'm afraid.

There's also the keyboard and mouse vs controllers problem, people on consoles get aim assist, i think the game is better with segregated PC and console crossplay because of the aim assist which is often compared to an aimbot in games where it is particularly strong.(both sides can complain about the other in games that have pc and console crossplay.)
How are the controls on console? i watched gameplay of the console version and it seems aiming properly is difficult, i wonder if people can get precise shots on maps that favor long range combat.

Unity IS optimized at least a little bit, but if the dev does all the optimization "sins" of course it will run slower.

Just changing compiler settings should already be a free performance boost at least on the renderer which seems to be where Isonzo struggles the most as the framerate drops on maps with high density of assets.
