Your men get protection from far away snipers and MGs and enemies advancing are somewhat impeded by their masks.
That's a very good point, and one of the downsides of using this tactic.
In my opinion, there's more downsides for the advancing team even if it gives them some cover, but of course you have to assess the situation and see if it is a good choice or not.
For maps with a lot of cover, like trenches and/or forests, the additionnal concealment given by the gas cloud won't make much of a difference anyway, while still forcing them to put on their masks.
And generally, I think you're at more of a disadvantage when exiting the cloud, as in the enemies will see you before you can see them or even just your surroundings.
