Possible bug- keeps going to start menu

I have this keep happening where I'm in the middle of a race and the game keeps hitting the start button and exiting back to the race it immediately goes back to the menu. This isn't happening all the time, but the most recent time it happened I had paused a race to open a YouTube live video on a second screen and when I went back to the game it wouldn't let me back in to the race.

I play with a Series X controller with the official Microsoft wireless dongle, and I initial thought was I had something wrong with the controller (happens both wireless and wired), but I have an old XBone controller that only works wired and it is happening with that, too.

Forza is the only game I am currently playing that I use a controller for so I guess I can't say definitively that this is a Forza issue, but the fact that this is happening with 2 different controllers makes me suspicious of it.

Just checked the Xbox accessory app and the Series X controller had an update to apply but Xbone did not.

It's a problem I sometimes get when alt-tabbing or clicking out of the game too. I think what's happening is the game changes your default controller to KB/M when you alt-tab or click out, and when you tab or click back in it gets confused when you try to close the menu before it can switch the default control scheme back to the controller (because you haven't used it yet since you just clicked back in)

So just try using the controller in the menus enough for the game to switch control schemes again and you should be fine. I open the world map then just exit out of the menus.

You're right, I was alt-tabbing out to click on YouTube.
I think I fixed it by using the mouse to click back on the screen for Forza instead of just alt-tab to get back in. Thank you.

So, the problem is actually pretty simple. I assume you're using 2 or more monitors as this happens more commonly with that setup, but this can still sometimes happen with a single monitor.

So, when you alt-tab from the game, it will automatically pause the game. Which is normal for everyone. However, sometimes what can happen is your game will 'appear' to be the primary application on your computer, however it might be your youtube/google that takes primary, causing the game to think you have alt-tabbed, even though your game is full screen (your xbox controller will still work normally at this point too, causing this to look even more confusing than it actually is)

Simply put, your game still thinks you've alt-tabbed, even though you've gone back to playing. An easy way to fix this, is just move your mouse cursor onto anywhere on your Forza window, and just simply left click. This will make Forza your primary application again, and stop it from thinking you're still alt-tabbed from the game. Hope this makes sense.
