Fix for Crashes on Game Launch/Splash Screen - Forza Horizon 5 - Finally!!
Hey fellow Forza Horizon 5 players!

I wanted to share my recent experience dealing with the frustrating issue of crashes on game launch or the splash screen. I know how incredibly disappointing it can be, especially when you're eager to dive into the game. I purchased Forza Horizon 5 just two days ago and immediately encountered this problem. I scoured the internet for solutions, contacted support, and tried various fixes, but nothing seemed to work. I was beginning to lose hope and was on the verge of desperation. 😅

But I wasn't ready to give up. On the second day, I was determined to find a way to make the game work. And guess what? After some persistent troubleshooting, I finally managed to get the game up and running! I couldn't wait to share the solution with all of you who might be facing the same issue.

So, let's cut to the chase and get to the fix:

The root of the problem was the WeMod Overlay – the very same overlay I had innocently been using for offline games to add a bit of fun (and cheats) to my gaming sessions. Little did I know, this was causing the crashes on game launch. The WeMod Overlay uses Xbox Game Bar and requires installation from the Microsoft Store.

HERE'S HOW I MANAGED TO FIX IT:

Disable Overlays: Many online solutions suggested disabling all overlays, including Discord, NVIDIA ShadowPlay, and more. I followed these steps, assuming it couldn't be an overlay issue.

Task Manager Investigation: Frustrated by continued crashes, I decided to delve deeper. I opened the Task Manager, navigated to the "Details" tab to view all running processes, and that's when I spotted the pesky "WeMod.Overlay.exe" process.

End the Task: I ended the "WeMod.Overlay.exe" task and attempted to launch the game again. At first, it crashed, but I persisted.

Persistent Overlay: Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the "WeMod.Overlay.exe" process was reappearing even though I had uninstalled WeMod completely from my PC. Furthermore, I couldn't delete the process location folder due to permission issues.

THE FIX: I decided to end the "WeMod.Overlay.exe" task again each time the game crashed during launch. I also made sure to check if the process reappeared when I clicked "Play Game" on Steam. Just before the game fully launched, I swiftly killed the WeMod overlay task, and lo and behold, the game started without a hitch!

If you're in the same boat but without WeMod, be sure to look out for similar programs or overlay processes that may be lurking on your PC.

I genuinely hope this solution works for all of you facing this frustrating crash issue. Remember, persistence pays off! Now, go ahead, enjoy Forza Horizon 5, and let's hit the virtual roads with a renewed passion.

Happy gaming!

Just uninstalled the process for good by opening Windows Settings > Apps > Search for WeMod Overlay > Uninstall.

I've never used WeMod and unfortunately, even after disabling every overlay the game still crashes after launch. I just started having this issue the past 3 days. I literally can't get passed the loading screen which appears after you launch the game.

they should have a singleplayer only mode that separates from your official stuff so you can play even with it on. or maybe a friends only mode?

i don't have wemod anything, it doesn't exist on my PC. Game still crashes without launching past the initial black screen before the loading screens start.

no forza games work on my R9 390 and 7800X3D. They were working just fine in early January, then they stopped working in February

Thank you so much for this fix, I’ve been stuck for almost 2 months it was that stupid WeMod overlay causing the problems.
