I've tinkered with it a bit and can safely say all you are doing is handicapping yourself.
The AI doesn't follow rules, so I don't see why they would bother trying to simulate tire wear for the AI.
I see it as more of a legacy feature they just never removed or balanced.

Yeah, it looks like you just described and I see no point in this feature also, it only ruins some long races so it's not a problem to just disable this option as for me. But maybe the devs will see this post and make their own conslusions
But this is old news for the devs, this has come up many times over the years. Nothing new for them.
i also like seeing wings fall off, and stuff like that. It's better than nothing. But, I understand the point.
I'm with you, I tend to like my car staying pretty - though it can be fun having your spoiler fall off after a jump that realistically should have completely destroyed your car.
