Whether you buy it on MS store or Steam, you dont need the pass to play it online on PC.
Gamepass gives you access to the game, it's a nteflix-like subscription that lets you play games without buying them.

thanks for reply. I just played the forza games on xbox and there you need the pass to play online even if you own the game by yourself.

online gaming is completely free on pc, for every game

you only need xbox live gold to play online if you're playing on xbox. if you play the same game on pc you can go online no problem. you can also join parties without gold on pc
