Compendium > Resources > Metals > (Copper? Iron?) Ore > About > Discovery.

On the left are exercises (or "research"); on the right are rewards and bonuses for doing them.
The 2-Stars award gives you the Bronze Bar recipe; same for Steel bars.

Copper Ore stands above the far corner of the farmyard and just across the stream in the southern Hills district, along with some Iron Ore.

Oh and have Abrill cook/pack lots of food; mining makes her eat Lots of it — maybe Forest Stew x25 or more? — all for free using *any* EDIBLE neighbourhood-discovered mushrooms and herbs listed in Compendium > Resources > Herbs, and Mushrooms.

Enough to get you started? Took me ages to discover such things, so I know how it is.
Given enough time, though, and you'll find that much of Fern Island finds its way into your memory 4 U.

I forgot what New Game looks like: no Compendium entries until you find things to put in it.
So: just mine some copper ore x10, pick as many herbs and mushrooms etc...and little banners will fly up telling you that they're added to the Compendium.
And before I forget—Best Source of Course: in the lower-right corner of the game's Main Menu, you'll see the game logo that, when clicked on, launches your Browser and takes you to the game Wiki...a Treasure Trove of Tips. Just tried it myself to make sure I'm not fooling both of us...

Um...I didn't think to mention a few more things that helped me when I started out.

I took Windows screenshots of all the tips that the game displays when we load it, and read them — like: talk to residents to both learn from several of them and to build friendships — Hearts Charts behind the Handshake icon in the Icon Bar along the top of Inventory — also, FYI: pressing L opens it, K opens Compendium, J opens Apprenticeship Quests—same as I opens Inventory.

I've built a "Hints & Tips" folder tree full of conversation screenshots with the Islanders that had any good tips in them — like Cassandra's talks about bees so I wouldn't get stung, then flowers that don't grow on the island so don't go looking for them; Patrice also talks of a Bugnet.

...continued:

After floundering for quite some time, I finally learned from tips in Community Screenshots to browse the Compendium's Info and Tutorials, and click on tabs and arrowheads to see what they had behind them — like the Discovery sections ("research"), which are actually the Witch Exam exercises that Abrill's mentor Absura gave her to complete her apprenticeship on Fern Island; we met her when Abrill talked to her via Crystal Ball and Mirage Agrimony used in a Farm Altar ritual to get blueprints (recipes, actually) for her broom — sure glad I took screenshots of That talk.

I also re-posted my pictorial tutorials on Tool Ring, Tool Bar and SnapFit.

Rogost sells the Build Tool at his Cash Box — its operating commands are displayed when it's open. Then when we buy, win, earn or are given a Blueprint: open Inventory and "Use" it to have the Build Tool "Learn" it.
We used to need several chests to store all our Blueprints; now they're all "learned" by the Build Tool, which in turn is held in the "Quick Access" Tool Ring — toggled open and closed with the Tab key.

SnapFit is used (a) with the Build Tool and (b) to pick up and Move/Rotate things around the game grid without calling up the Build Tool, but using the same command keys as it does — NOTE: press ESC to drop something back exactly where it was if it was picked up accidentally (I definitely memorized *that* keystroke).

And to avoid info overload, I'll end with that.
