Are classes really necessary?
I mean I love games, but classes, they're so restrictive in weapons (which is my main issue) amongst other stuff.

How would the game be if you removed classes and or just allowed people to pick their own guns?

if you feel there is a group meta that is overshadowing other setups, that just means the others classes need to be brought up for review and update. it is a common problem when you have class based system. the same problem also exists in a non class based system. people will gravitate to the most powerful combo. but it is opinion. people can still make groups work with less meta combo, and they have.

meta slaves are the ones that crack me up.

People complaining that having no classes would mean a boring meta have to be the funniest people I have ever seen. You people realize there already IS a boring meta for Extreme and Insane, where 90% of the guns are useless and you always have to end up using the same 5 weapons? Not to mention classes like Phalanx, Lancer, Demo and Doc on Extreme/Insane are not remotely as good and mandatory as Tech, Gunner and Recon are.

Go back to your 4,000 hours in Gary's Mod.
Maybe I'll let my Marine Corp son(in Japan) know that kids still play that title.
Hell, even my 20yo only played 24 hot hours of that title before canning it.
Nuf said.

The Alien franchise goes back a LONG way bud.
This is the big boy camp, many of us were at the beginning.
And the following is thick.

only that you are talking about a proper group comp and not x3 docs that can deal the same damage as tech or demo because of no weapon limitation. id rather have a lobby that has 3 different classes that work well together than a lobby that has 3 of the same class using the same weapon setup and class mods.

Grim Dawn is an ARPG.
Tomato/Banana. Yes, they're both a fruit.
But completely different.

Also, you've only had 18 hours in AFE.
I'm trying to comprehend how you could even understand what full char/weap unlocks and later difficulty waves are even like right now.

But please felines, don't stop, continue your mute discussion here.
I am thoroughly enjoying this read with my morning coffee.
Smells like Teen Spirit

Meta will always exist you can't escape it but that doesn't mean nothing else works or that it's bad.

There will always be people that are slaves to that meta as they either can't think for themselves and make good builds or aren't good enough to make them work.

The main meta class we struggle to get away from is Recon, the ammo is hard to manage when duo'ing and for trios it can still become an issue on longer events if you don't hold near the ammo box you are given.

But after that the "non-meta" classes are still more than capable.
Our first insane queen kill was with a Doc as we figured the movement speed would help with kiting her - and it did.
Lancer has huge damage, abilities that require minimal investment really let's you take all the masteries you want for your preferred weapons.
Demo is still the king of CC, 2 knockbacks combined with a slow like a cryo and you can buy the team some 10 seconds before anything can reach you - this is how we duo'd double armoured elites. Ofc with his bleed and precision rockets he's also the fastest way to kill the queen.
The real odd one out for me is phalanx, his kit is just too passive for my liking. But I've seen some people use him to tank the queen on insane so he's obviously got something going for him.

Not to mention almost every gun in this game is viable to some degree or another even if it's just a niche on a couple of missions or classes.

People too afraid to try the other classes or experiment prolly have no idea what other roles are capable of.

Maybe not , but the developer wanted you to have the feeling that you play a realistic game, letting you have just two guns. When you have just two guns, classes have sense. You want heavy guns , you won't look then like one who has just a pistol and a rifle etc
As a marketing element , I think developer wants also to prolong the "life" of the game and alienate the boredom which could install over time
I would also really enjoy a classless system. But people can't handle it when you have too much freedom of choice so here we are.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
