Just adding to this that as your skill goes up you will need to advance difficulty to avoid boredom. I play solo and am not particularly good at the game and I now find Standard absolutely yawn-worthy. I almost never feel threatened at Intense, and have been pushing some dumb builds or trying for 15 min mission times. Extreme is quite a step up and what I play with friends.
If you are not feeling any pressure while playing AFE, try the next tier. You will be tested.
As for story, I feel it's okay. It's very much Aliens. Marines, guns, shooting, corporate lore and alien backstory ending in a triumphant explosion if you win and 'critical mission failure' (everyone dies) if you don't. It's not Heavy Rain or anything but it's fine for what it is. I don't recall anyone lauding the story or brilliance of scripting presented in Vermintide or Left 4 Dead.
I do really enjoy the voice acting, I think they nailed the atmosphere, tone and jargon right to the wall to match the Aliens theme. I cannot get enough of Ko and Herrera mouthing off.
