Is it worth it for single player campaign story mode?

If you are a fan of the franchise then its worth it.
I finished the game with bots on normal difficulty.
The game has many players now given that we have a new dlc and a crossplay update a while ago.

Reminder: This is a AA game so its not up to par with some of the high budgeted games from the franchise but If you want to go kill some aliens and stuff its great. :)

It's not the same unfortunately. In each chapter (3 mission bunch of each) you can make easy first 2 missions, bu the boss mission in every chapter is tougher than medium and you play with bots. In a way the bot are as good as YOU are. Keep that in mind. If you let just THEM do do all the heavy lifting, you will wind up with both of your bots on the ground. So, theoretically you can make the whole campaign with bots , but practically you won't go as far as first two missions. Please let me know if my prediction was right :)
On the other hand playing with two real people your odds increases exponentially, especially if they are good or you three as a team are well coordinating by yourselves. And it's more fun to play with friends/real people. Your choice, I wish you good luck!

bots are garbage the best thing they can do is be a distraction and kill weaker enemies. Against tougher enemies (like elites) they deal little to no damage and are, at best, a distraction. If you are going to play with bots you NEED to play a DPS class and do most of the heavy lifting ie. Demo, Lancer, Gunner, Tech, etc.

Not really, it's more about challenging yourself doing the missions on harder difficulty with different builds. Solo play is quite limited.

yeah, i dont want to really get stuck if the bots are that bad

i like my single player stuff, play at my own pace, but if im gonna get inundated by aliens with useless bot friendlies i wont get far....

To be fair, it takes a special kind of mangina to rush and stuff on standard difficulty. I would say that dont be afraid to matchmake, and by the later levels you may have to up the difficulty for the exp but by then you should already be well versed enough anyway

The game has plenty of story and *Intel which you find on various missions which advance the story. I play mainly single player with the bots and find it very rewarding in that regard. The bots will have your back most of the time but that effort needs to be *returned when things get too hairy. Meaning you'll need to resuscitate your fellow bots from time to time in order to successfully complete a mission. Challenge cards are available that give experience and credit awards to players who like higher difficulty levels. You can advance in rank and those give rewards like unlocking new weapons colors and new uniforms. The different classes provide different weapons and *special abilities that are available when playing in that class. I have no opinion on the co-op since I haven't played it yet, but I'm sure if it's half as good as the single player missions it'll be fun and challenging to play.

Solo is pretty bad because the bots you are saddled with are absolutely terrible. They are weak, can't be customised, you can't give them even the simplest commands and they constantly walk out in front of you when you are firing.

They also regularly derp out and are just all around useless.

That is not a story. It's exactly what THEY want you to think, that it is. (and it seems that they tricked you). A story is not told in logs, dull dialogues and found objects. To tell a story for a game needs certain talent, skill. Have you ever play Mass Effect ? THAT is a story told, not here. Here they just cut the corners to fool you that they have a one , too. They haven't got that right. Yet.

It's still a story, it's just not one told through cutscenes and other methods you enjoy. It's mostly standard Alien fare (WY experimentation gone wrong) and now the marines are sent in to deal with it. Along the way you discover a greater threat than the Xenomorphs - the Pathogen.
