And they're usually deployed with a second fireteam as backup and for tactical flexibility (flanking, ambush etc.).^^
On the other hand they may have adopted a different doctrine after both fireteams at Hadley's Hope were basically wasted with no gain.
There's a "cheat" - or used to be - that allows a 4th player in. Watched it on YT months back. Not sure if it's still possible, but it hardly sabotaged the game play from what I saw.
6 never seen someone but still +1 player to a run is so cool stuff to have.
they had it when 2 players joining at the same mission by the same time, somehow the game carried both in to the same mission when already 3 other dwarfs fighting.
I liked in this game that we found the other fireteam deep in they was (3) too xD was funny, why not (4)..... real life fireteam have more than 4 no?
