Tbh, the weapons in this game are all pretty much "good." my Gunner build Uses the Pulse rifle and Hicks shotgun. My Squaddie Love the Smart gun for "open" Missions and Flamers for "closed in" ones.
And like it been said, there is rocket/grenades launcher that really help on higher difficulty as it has a pretty good splash dmg, but hard to use once they get close obviously, but that's why you have two weapons.
So every heavy weapon in the game is basically terrible and assumes perfect play from the Demo to bring them along, or they assume you're playing on Standard. If you are playing on Standard, bring anything. You can just run through the map shooting the floor and win, no issue.
Since just about no one is going to play perfectly, the best bet is to just let the Demo advance alone until they TK themselves if they pull out anything except the Smartgun. And even then, stay behind them because they can still cut you in half it's just harder to do so.
I actually find the Flamethrower the worst due to the way it tempts most pubs to use it. If you need to run ahead into the swarm to fry the baddies, leaving you and your teammates isolated separately, you're probably doing it wrong.
But just as was said earlier, its more about the player than the weapon.
Gunner, Tech and Recon are the Best for Extreme+, you can take a Demo with the RPG 1 shot, but you have to be VERY careful. Just remember that ABILITIES do not Harm team mates, so you can fire your Missile ability at point blank into your team mates and not do any dmg, same with the Flame Turret and the Gunners Grenade.
I used it in demo mode with a flame turret on my side placed by a tech. Then the tech and the other player cover the oppsoitee side. NOTHING gets through. Flame is OP as hell, and is by far the best weapon in the game.
The grenade launcher and Rocket launcher have almost NO AOE. SO they become slow, single target explosives with limited ammo. You feel like you are having to snipe with a grenade or rocket. Its really badly designed and not worth it.
Currently, the flame thrower is his best weapon by far. Followed by the smartgun.
Rocket launcher was nice too.
Smart gun felt underwhelming to me, but maybe it's because I only tried it at rank 1 before having any upgrades basically; Like yeah, it killed bugs alright. For about 30 seconds before being completely out of ammo with another 5 minutes of gameplay between you and the next ammo patch.
My experience with using the flamethrower basically amounted to my teammates going "My god I can't see anything when you're firing that" every time I used it, and attempting to spray down runners before they reached me, Only for them to reach me anyway and hit me before dying.
