can someone please explain how to use this skill?

it shoots a bolt of lightning (very cool) at some completely random place (not very cool). afaik - no way to increase the number of bolts via link runes, no way to make it home-in on enemies.

i saw that prior to the big patch (new player here), it used to be a sort of defense skill that triggered when something melee attacks you but it does no such thing now. it just spits out random strikes of lightning that does not hit any enemy 95% of the time.

what's the point of this skill? can someone kindly enlighten me how this is supposed to be used?

Nah, just ignore that skill, it's fancy but totally useless. The mechanic of that skill before the big update is more valuable than the current one. They have no idea how to make some skills usable in some ways.
