I haven't had a proper milsim featuring AI teammates since the early 00's. It's always half-assed coop games now :/
I miss the strategy of commanding AI while playing a shooter. Setting up ambush points and being able to do things by the book without worrying about other players feelings and fun. Sometimes the most realistic thing to do is to tell the saw gunner to sit at a corner and look down a road or alley way. Shoot anything that crosses. That's it. Then for the next 8 mins the rest of us get some stuff done nearby. The saw gunner might get some action but probably not. He's there to keep us safe while we work. It's boring but it's the way we would do it in real life.
I can't do that in coop. The player would tell me to "go f yourself, that's boring." And I wouldn't blame them. It is. In coop, I gotta go with the flow and be cool. I cant be telling kids to do things realistic and boring. I gotta let people have fun. That's why I like AI teammates in games like this. I can play this game as a milsim fps with lite strategy elements.
I'm looking forward to the AI update in October. I hope it shows some real effort.
I agree, it's unfortunate that the gaming industry is abandoning proper single player content for the low hanging fruit of co-op only games.
I too wouldn't be surprised if AI teammates never gets added, but even if they do add them, they only mention a "go" command. I do wonder how many different commands you will be able to give to the AI.
That 'go' command sounds like it's going to be a general command for anything we point at. Sounds like right off the bat the AI is going to be assuming and guessing what the player wants to do. It sounds pretty ambitious to me.
I was expecting something more simple. Just being able to tell an AI teammate where to go and what direction to cover. As long as they can take cover properly and suppress targets, I'm happy. With that simple ability alone we can bound, set up security cordons and ambush points.
Godspeed. Thanks for the comment.
That's what ever developer says, but then the sales slow to a trickle, and there is no longer any incentive to finish the game. The development plan then changes to adding just enough new content, a new gun, map, mission, once, or twice a year, to keep the trickle of sales going. We've all seen this happen over, and over again with early access games.
I honestly hope the best for this game, and the devs, hopefully they will succeed in finishing the game, and it sells well.
Good luck.
That's what I thought this discussion was about too. I wasn't only talking about the campaign.
We'll have to wait till after the holiday weekend for clarification.
