How well does co-op mode work? Is it easy to join a friend's game? Can you both be in the same plane (like one pilot, one gunner)?

Yes, you can both be in the same plane. The exact how-to is below:

Host steps
1. Start the game, select 'Campaign & Multiplayer', select campaign in which you've already unlocked a plane with at least two seats (Entente's DH.4 & DH.10 and Central Powers Albatros C.III & AGO C.I)
2. On the left board there is a list of planes. Select the desired plane and make sure that the 'Fly to Mission' and 'Commander Plane' checkboxes are marked on the middle board.
3. Select 'Multiplayer' from the left board.
4. Create a private lobby, set its name, give it to your partner.
5. Select 'Create Session' and 'Co-Op'.
6. Wait until your partner joins the lobby.

Player steps
1. Start the game, select 'Campaign & Multiplayer', select the same campaign.
2. Select 'Multiplayer' from the left board.
3. Select the private lobby, enter the name the host gave you and select 'Join Lobby'.
4. You will see the plane selected by the Host in the aircraft list, select the gunner icon to join the aircraft crew.
