The idea of the demo was to have the humans in a bad spot and to look if you can turn it around for them either if they help themselves or with the the help of the next door aliens.
In the full game you will start with an empty galaxy and only stone age societies and can form the history of the humans ( if you have humans in your play trough ) as you wish.
Definitely there are a lot of connections and follow up events missing, stuff like you mentioned, reaction events after an invasion and similar stuff. either in the small texts that come up when you collect flares or in big events that handle with these issues.
