Is HDR supposed to be this dark?
I have the brightness that you have to set set to max (LG C7 OLED TV) and both the village and castle are sort of very dark, is it supposed to be that way?

I think so yes and same goes for RE7

Yes the HDR makes the screen incredibly dark - much more than it needs to be. Will be playing this with HDR off. Some games it works great (Like Horizon Zero Dawn)

I had to turn HDR off in RE7 as it was too dark and "washed"

Yeah, same goes for me. Doom Eternal has amazing HDR but for some reason Re7 and now, Re8 have aggressively dark HDR.

When HDR is enabled and properly configured on a good HDR display, it can get very dark. This is intentional, though as always you can tweak it your liking. If you're trying to go for the intended-look, use the in-game configuration for HDR

I've been fighting this for the past 30 minuets. i thought it was an issue with windows 10 it self.

it's not intended i played the PS5 demo on the same OLED TV and the HDR was "normal" ALL blacks are crushed in the PC version.

better explain this, ANYTHING the makes a shadow, even out side is (darkness of space) black. the cabin area with the woman and her father, everything is black you can only see her face. even though light is coming in through the windows

No it's broken. Was tinkering with it myself and I found out that when i calibrate the HDR in game it'll show correctly until I pause the game and then unpause it again then the image becomes overly dark where you can't even make out details in the shadows. Try recalibrating HDR while in game (you don't actually have to change anything) and see what happens, should be fine but next time you pause the game it'll be overly dark again.
It's funny because I remember have HDR issue in RE7 too. RE2 and 3 remake the HDR is fine!

Indeed, off it goes, thankfully I am NOT allowing time to run out through all the testing I did to TRY to get the blacks to be less insanely crushing, best advice to not lose demo time, turn it the heck off.

Ok, UPDATE: Turn off HDR in your Windows desktop, then run RE8 in Fullscreen, THEN turn on the game HDR, that for some odd reason seems to be having less issues.

^This! I was going nuts trying to figure out what was wrong, then I downloaded the PS4 demo and the HDR works perfectly fine (same TV, same HDMI port, same cable, same settings).

PC HDR in this game is borked.
