Why Are Zombies Called Freddies?
I watched The Return of the Living Dead (1985) for the first time and noticed one of the characters who becomes a zombie is called Freddy. This is also the first movie to introduce the idea of zombies eating brains.

I don't think anyone else has figured out this connection based on googling it and searching through the forums.

Its an oxymoron expression. If you read the work "F R E D D Y" backwards and then switch the preliferex, then the answer is obvious. If it were not for proper nouns, then the whole thing would be wonky - But because of the oxymoron it works.

Sorry, I'm not english talk as mothertongue, so I still don't get it. Can you please develop on what "preliferex" means? because YDDERF does not mean something to me neither...

I also have no idea what they meant unless they means something like Freddies sounds and looks a bit like Deadies and is a way of making zombies sound less threatening.

I don't know about oxymorons, but maybe I've another clue, in this movie there is one character called "Freddy" which becomes a zombie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Return_of_the_Living_Dead
Maybe it is some kind of reference to that movie?

Why are you pretending you just came up with something I said?

oops! I did not read your full first message, my fault! I was just seeking for answers too...
Sorry...
It seems you're the closest to a real answer...

No problem. I was just confused what was going on.

I fully understand you, I don't like neither when people don't read the full question before trying to answer... my bad...

So, getting back to the question, Freddy is also an horror character in the 80's (Freddy Krueger). This may also be some kind of a clue? (I've just re-read your question to be sure you did not mentioned it already)

my guess is some kinda lore thing like the character knew a Freddy when he worked in construction

I always took it as an extension of the phrase "You're dead, Fred." So the zombies are all Freddy, 'cause they're dead.

sounds good too, but from where comes that phrase? a movie? a show? ...

I like to think its a throwback reference to "Fred the mannequin" from the movie "I am Legend"

Or twisting an unrelated movie title[m.imdb.com] into a survivor’s catchphrase?

“Drop dead, Fred!”
